Do I still need to rank on Google?
Yes. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode pull pages from its search index using its core ranking systems, then summarise them. Ranking doesn't guarantee a place in the summary, but not ranking makes it very unlikely.
"The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems."

Why does it matter so much now?
Because fewer people click past the summary. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults: when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a normal result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there wasn't one.
Google says AI Overviews now have over 2.5 billion monthly users. If you're not in the summary, many searchers never see you.

How should my pages be written?
Put the answer first. Use headings that match the questions people type, keep paragraphs short and specific, and include details such as location, service and who it's for.
Pew found long, natural-language searches are much more likely to trigger a summary: 53% of searches with ten or more words, against 8% of one- or two-word searches. So write for the full questions your buyers ask, not just short keywords.

What else does Google check?
Your Google Business Profile, reviews, structured data and mentions elsewhere on the web all help Google confirm who you are. Since 31 August 2026, Search Console also lets every site owner see how their pages perform in AI features and choose whether to be included.
