Is SEO dead now that people use AI search?

No. Google says its AI features are built on its normal ranking systems, and recent data shows traditional search is still growing alongside AI search. What has changed is the prize: buyers often get one answer naming a few businesses, so being on page one is no longer enough.

    What do the experts say?

Search Engine Land, one of the longest-running publications in the field, takes a clear position. So does Lily Ray, whose widely shared article argued that AI search is booming but SEO is still not dead.

"The fundamentals – technical excellence, relevance, authority, content that meets human needs – still matter. They always will."

    Is AI search replacing Google?

Not yet. Search Engine Land's September 2026 review of the data found AI search and traditional search growing at about the same rate. What is falling is clicks: Google increasingly answers the question on the results page itself.

What still works from traditional SEO?

Technical health, helpful pages, a strong Google Business Profile, reviews and earned links all still feed AI answers. Google's own guidance for AI features is, in short, to keep doing good SEO.

    What's different now?

AI reads your business as an entity, not just a set of pages. It wants consistent facts, direct answers and agreement across independent sources before it names you. A business can rank first on Google and still be missing from ChatGPT's or Gemini's answer.
