What is query fan-out, and how should I write for it?

Query fan-out is when Google's AI runs several related searches at once to build a fuller answer. The best response is to cover a topic thoroughly for your readers, answering the natural follow-up questions, not to create a separate page for every variation, which Google says can count as spam.

    How does query fan-out work?

Google describes it as a set of related searches generated by the AI to fetch more results. Its example: for "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds", the fan-out searches might include "best herbicides for lawns", "remove weeds without chemicals" and "how to prevent weeds in lawn".

Why does it matter for my business?

Fan-out means more of your pages can be pulled into one answer, and Google says it shows a wider, more varied set of links than a classic search. A clinic's page on recovery time or costs could be cited in an answer to "best cataract surgeon near me".

    What should I avoid?

Mass-producing pages for every possible variation of a search.

"Doing so primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy."

    What should I do instead?

Answer the questions your customers really ask, with clear headings and sections, on pages that each stand on their own. That's why our answer pages each cover one real buyer question, with related questions linked rather than copied.
