AI search glossary

    What is Citation?

A citation is a link or reference to a source page inside an AI-generated answer.

Citations differ from brand mentions: a page can be cited without the brand being recommended, and a brand can be named without a link.

Why it matters for your business

A citation is the link or source an AI answer shows. Being cited sends some visitors to you and, just as importantly, shows readers the AI trusted your page.

    How it works

    1. 1

      Retrieval

The AI fetches pages relevant to the question.

    2. 2

      Selection

It picks the pages that best support specific statements in its answer.

    3. 3

      Attribution

It links to those pages beside or below the answer.

    Common misunderstandings

    Myth

Being cited and being recommended are the same.

    Reality

An AI can cite your article while recommending a competitor. Both matter, but they are different goals.

    What to do about it

    • Publish original facts others can't, such as your own data and client results.
    • Write clear, quotable sentences backed by sources.
    • Keep pages indexed and eligible for snippets.

    Questions people ask

Do all AI assistants show citations?

Not always. Tools that search the web, like Google's AI features and ChatGPT search, usually do; answers from training data alone may not.
