    What is AEO?

Also known as: Answer engine optimisation

AEO is the work of making your content the direct answer to a question, originally in featured snippets and voice assistants, now in AI answers too.

AEO and GEO overlap heavily. Google says both describe work on visibility in AI search, which from its perspective is still SEO.

Why it matters for your business

AEO started when Google began showing a single highlighted answer above the results, and voice assistants read out one answer. Being that answer meant getting the attention.

AI assistants have made that pattern the norm. The habits of AEO, answering clearly and early, now help in AI answers as well.

    How it works

    1. 1

      Question first

Each page or section targets one question a buyer actually asks.

    2. 2

      Answer early

The first two or three sentences give the answer plainly, before the detail.

    3. 3

      Support the answer

The rest of the page adds evidence, examples and next steps so the answer can be trusted.

    Common misunderstandings

    Myth

AEO is only about FAQ pages.

    Reality

FAQs help, but any page can be written so its answer is clear and easy to quote.

    Myth

Short answers are all that matter.

    Reality

A short answer gets picked up; the depth around it is what makes it credible.

    What to do about it

    • List the 20 questions buyers ask before choosing a business like yours.
    • Give each question a clear heading and a two-sentence answer underneath.
    • Back every answer with a source, example or client story.
    • Link related answers to each other so readers and crawlers can follow the topic.

    Questions people ask

Do I need AEO and GEO separately?

No. Google treats both as part of SEO, and the same well-written, well-supported pages serve both.

Does AEO still work with featured snippets?

Yes. Clear, question-led content remains eligible for featured snippets and for AI answers.
