    Speakable schema marks the passages on your page that voice assistants should read aloud. Here's what it does, when it's worth adding, and how to add it in a few minutes.

    Most schema tells machines what something is: an organization, a product, an article. Speakable schema is different. It tells them which part of the page is worth saying out loud.

    As more people ask questions by voice and get spoken answers back, that small hint is becoming more useful.

    What speakable schema is

    Speakable is a property from Schema.org. You add it to your page's structured data and point it at the specific sections that make a good spoken answer, usually a headline and a short summary paragraph. It uses either CSS selectors or XPath to say "these parts".

    A simple example looks like this:

    {
      "@context": "https://schema.org",
      "@type": "WebPage",
      "name": "What is AI search visibility?",
      "speakable": {
        "@type": "SpeakableSpecification",
        "cssSelector": [".article-headline", ".article-summary"]
      },
      "url": "https://example.com/ai-search-visibility"
    }

    Who uses it

    Google introduced speakable for news content read by Google Assistant, and it is still officially listed as a beta feature for news publishers. That's the honest picture: it isn't a ranking switch, and adding it won't guarantee a voice assistant reads your page.

    So why do I still recommend it for many sites? Because it forces a good habit. To mark a passage as speakable, you need a passage that works on its own: a clear, short, direct answer. That is exactly the kind of passage AI tools like to quote, whether they read it aloud or not.

    When it's worth adding

    • Your page answers a clear question ("what is", "how do I", "how much does").
    • You have a short summary near the top that makes sense without the rest of the page.
    • You publish news, guides, FAQs or explainers.

    It's less useful on pages with no single answer, like a product listing or a contact page.

    How to add it, step by step

    1. Write the speakable passage first. Two or three sentences, 20 to 30 seconds when read aloud. No "click here", no tables, no references to images.
    2. Give it a stable class or ID in your HTML, for example class="article-summary".
    3. Add the speakable property to your page's JSON-LD, pointing at that class.
    4. Test it. Run the page through the Schema.org validator to make sure the markup is valid.

    The faster way

    We built a free Speakable Schema Generator that does most of this for you. Paste your page, and it finds the passages that work best as spoken answers and writes the speakable markup for them. If you want to go further, the Voice Search Optimizer checks the whole page for voice readiness.

    The short version

    Speakable schema marks the parts of your page that should be read aloud. It's officially a beta feature, so treat it as a helpful hint, not a guarantee. The real value is the discipline: writing short, clear, stand-alone answers is exactly what makes a page easy for AI to quote.
